What drives septic cost
The type of system is the biggest number in the whole job. A Type 1 on ground that drains — just a tank and a drain field — costs far less than a Type 2 or a Type 3 carrying treatment gear. After that it's your soil and how fast it takes water, how high the winter water table climbs, whether we can get a machine in, how big the tank and the field have to be, and the setbacks we have to clear. Every job also carries the soil evaluation, the design and the filing, billed as one item. Below we've broken out general ranges for each type of system and each service.
New system vs. replacement or repair
Build a system from nothing and you're at the top of the range. Replace a failed drain field and you land in the middle. Swap a part — an effluent filter, a baffle, a pump — and you start from about $500. Pumping the tank is the smallest cheque you'll write and the one you'll write most often, and it's what keeps you off the other three.

Why quotes vary
Two quotes on the same address can come out different, and usually it's for real reasons. One of us designed it differently. The other allowed for more digging, or for putting the yard back afterwards.
